Biography

 

Leszek Zadlo, born in Krakow, though being among the saxophone players that confessingly refer to John Coltrane, has developed a very personal musical language full of contrasts.  

He has worked with nurnerous renowned bands and musicians of the jazz scene, such as Elvin Jones (Jazzmachine), the ORF-, NDR-, WDR-Bigband, Thad Jones Bigband, Slide Hampton Bigband, the RIAS Symphony Orchestra, European Jazz Ouintet, Experimenti Berlin and Overtone Orchestra.

 

In 1972 the musician founded his own formation (Leszek Zadlo Ensemble) and the Polski Jazz Ensemble in 1983. Moreover Leszek Zadlo was appointed leader of the European Art Orchestra in 1999. For over 20 years Leszek Zadlo has been working together with Claus Bantzer. One of the results of this fruitful cooperation was the improvisation CD " Illumination" for ARTE NOVA.

Besides his performances at prestigious festivals and lots of recordings for radio, TV, and more than 70 LP/CDs, Zadlo has also become known as a composer of stage and film music.

He has been teaching saxophone and flute since 1986 at the jazz department of the Music Conservatory in Würzburg and since 1991 at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich. At the Music Conservatory in Würzburg he was nominated a Professor in 2003 und moreover he is acting as the chairman of the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der deutsch-polnischen Verständigung e.V. in Munich.

LESZEK ZADL0 ENSEMBLE

 

The LZE are Leszek Zadlo (Saxes/Flute) Paulo Cardoso (Bass) and Billy Elgart (Drums)

Leszek Zadlo was born in Poland (which he left 1966) and studied in Cracow, Vienna and Graz. He's a saxophone teacher of Jazz and improvisation at the conservatories in Munich and Würzburg. His music convinces through conceptionial and emotional completeness which enables him to be a very individual, modern and up-to-date Jazz musician. His improvisations are full of contrasts, Joe Henderson described it as “very interesting music”. The tenor player tries new sounds on the saxophone, but one can feel and hear that he is also aware of the tradition of his instrument. His music is also very emotional thanks to a very affective playing concerning the lyrical as well as dramatical aspects of Jazz. His music is outstanding because he is able to combine feeling with the sound of his music. Zadlo has been leading this ensemble since 1972. He has already played with Elvin Jones, Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Heath, Art Farmer, Harold Rubin, Joachim Kühn, George Russel. the-European Jazz Quintet, Polski Jazz Ensemble, Slight Hampton Bigband and many other musicians and bands.

He has recorded more than 70 records for example Thoughts, Breath, Time-Emit. Space, Parpar (recorded in Israel) and many more.

Paulo Cardoso was born in Brazil and also teaches at the conservatory in Munich. He studied Jazz in Germany after he had finished his classical studies in Brazil. Cardoso is very famous for his versatility which has been appreciated by Art Farmer, Mal Waldron. Archie Shepp and others who engaged for tours all over the world. His very rhythmical and swinging acoustic style adds a very powerful sound and time feeling to the ensemble. 

Billy Elgart (USA) was playing with the New Music Scene in New York, Boston and Los Angeles during the 1960s, including Carla Bley. Paul Bley, Sam Rivers, .… In Europe he recorded many Lps and Cds and participated in radio and TV productions with musicians as Lee Konitz, Charly Mariano., Tim Berne. Barre Phillips, .… He works with the Kammerspiele in Munich and teaches at the conservatory in Würzburg. Since many years he has been playing and touring with Leszek.

The Leszek Zadlo Ensemble has until now recorded 8 Cds and Lps with different musicians, it plays up-to-date music, improvisation and emotion are of primary interest: “play energy”. The music is especially melodic, harmonic and rhythmic.
